How can you work wine into the Super Bowl party? People think of wine for special occasions or special food. Wine can certainly be enjoyed with casual food at a Super Bowl party. Wine is for your daily consumption particularly at events where food is featured with friends like the Super Bowl Party.
Grilling: if you do we have a couple of great wines for you. Petite Syrah with its dense blackberry fruit character, mixed with black pepper notes, and smoked meats will be fantastic. Depending on your style of grilling Red Zinfandel could also be a great choice.
Nachos with melted cheese: a cornerstone of sporting events. The saltiness of the corn chips and fattiness of the cheese require a wine with flavor and snap of acidity to cut through. You will get that and more with a good Chardonnay.
Go easy on the hot peppers or spiciness in your party chow. Wine can hold up to a certain amount of spice, but excessively spicy food will kill your ability to taste anything.
Guacomole: Pairing wine with guacamole (keep in mind this dish has richness from the avocado, and then there is the lime juice making the dish piquant.) The wine needs to be rather full and rich, but the lime juice has the acidity so you’ll need a wine that will be crisp and refreshing. A Sauvignon Blanc might be an obvious choice because of its herbal character, or a Pinot Gris for acidity. A rich, full bodied, Chardonnay could be your choice which will balance the richness of the avocado. However, an oaked Chardonnay may taste bitter with the guacamole and in turn make the avocado taste sour.
Pizza: Whether the topping is pepperoni or sausage, if you want to be authentic with your pizza, you have to have a Italian wine, preferably Chianti or other Sangiovese-based Tuscan blends. Better Chiantis have the flavor to hold up to the savory toppings and the acidy.
Wings: not-too-hot wings go well with a slightly sweet Riesling. You can also have them with “Jam Jar” sweet shiraz from South Africa too.
